Civil war bullet?

Found this yesterday evening hunting a known encampment. I'm still new to this. I think it looks like a Watervliet, but no way it's .44 cal...I think.

Colt made a .44 that had a bullet that looked like yours, but if possible give us a little better picture.

Sorry for the poor quality cell photos...my DSLR has been sitting near the AC and need to be defogged! This really is a small round...38 or smaller...

Your bullet is one of the early-model (1850s) Colt bullets for revolvers. In the photo, your bullet's diameter appears to be just slightly less than half of a US dime's diameter (.70-inch), so it is probably a .31 early-model Colt bullet. In the "Handbook Of Civil War Bullets & Cartridges" it is shown as bullet #4. In the McKee-&-Mason book on civil war bullets ("Civil War Projectiles II"), it is #505.

The army generally carried the .44 caliber, while the navy generally carried the .38 caliber. I kinda figured you had a civil war bullet by the looks and the fact you were hunting an old camp. If they missed that one, they probably missed some more.
