Hi all, I found this bullet (looks like .50 cal) in Jonesburg, Missouri in a field near a one room schoolhouse that was built in 1900.

The bullet is old and looks and feels like solid lead. Does anyone know if there were any battles in this area? Has anyone else here ever found a bullet that looks similar to this one?

Thanks,
Nat

Thanks for all your help, it was an exciting find and it's even more exciting to me that it even has a possibility of being from the CW era.

Hey Nat, you from Jonesburg ? I am right east of you. That is a .58 caliber. Can you see seam marks on it ?

Whether it is a civil war bullet or not it is probably from that era and it is still an excellent artifact. Many non-military men used those weapons for hunting and protecting their families from dangers of the frontier. If you find several more bullets and/or other artifacts it would confirm that it is a civil war bullet. Keep looking in that area. Excellent find. Monty

I have found C.W. bullets in yards on at least two occasions in places where there was no C.W. history. Best as I can figure, sometimes these were brought back by veterans, or even purchased and subsequently lost by folks a generation or two after the Civil War. Same thing with the occasional Roman coin found in a yard in the U.S.. I found a squashed three-ringer at an old, one-room school house over the holidays. Again, no Civil War history in the vicinity. I found my last sword belt plate in a churchyard (again, no Civil War activity in the area). Puzzling as such finds may be, we'll never know where the war vets ended up, which civilians took what home after the war, or who brought what to show and tell at school. Hope this helps.

Regards,

No I'm not from Jonesburg...a friend of mine had family that lived there and he took me out to check the area near the old school. I'll have to go out there again. Thanks again everyone for the replies.
