Over the course of watching many YouTube videos of various people out detecting, every time they find a 3 ring bullet, it is automatically a "Civil War bullet." Were these bullets not used before or after the war? Were soldiers provided their weapons or did they provide their own? Were leftover rifles sold to the general public? Thanks for any help with this.

It is civil war era. The Minie was invented in 1849 and was primarily used during the Crimean war and the Civil war. Most soldiers were issued guns but a lot of southerners supplieed their own when supplies ran out.

Good Question, The 3 ring Minnie was not "King" for long by the end of the War self contained Rim-Fire then center-fire cartridges QUICKLY Pushed the Large Caliber Paper / Linen / Gut, muzzle loading cartridges into obscurity.

Tho I'm sure many 3 ringers / Minnie's were put to use long after the War. 'The just had to be esp, by the impoverished.'.

Google search "history of the Minnie ball". Good info you will find.

Hunters, father's teaching family to shoot, there are many possibilities other than fired in anger. Most times folks are talking "era" rather than literally fired by a Civil War soldier in battle. I have found Civil War "era" bullets, musketballs, here in New York. :occasion14:

Thanks for all the replies. I kind of figured it was an "era" type thing, but you never hear it said.
