Civil War Belt Buckle?

Hi Everybody, this is my only good find in yesterday's lunchtime. It is a belt buckle no question. But could be a civil war buckle? Just my imagination,or i really see an eagle wing in the center? I will try to clean more,but it's in very bad shape. Any ideas? Thanks for looking. Pannonian

Looks like part of a sword belt plate. Nice find and heart breaker at the same time.

This appears to be the left side of the plate, and lacking an integral, cast belt loop as shown in the example posted by Iron Patch.

If there are no indications that the loop has been broken off, then this may be a Regulation 1874 pattern rather than a Regulation 1851 pattern plate of the Civil War period.
