Civil War Artifacts??? Knife, Grommets and Rope Thimble

A friend of mine has been digging a spot in S.C. known to have had Civil War campsites and a skirmish. He has recovered a few artifacts but not certain if what he has is Civil War related. Please look at the photos and let me know what you think please. There are some tent grommets, a possible knife blade that is bent in the middle and the Tang is broken. And last is a Rope Thimble that appears to be brass or bronze. All of these items are found at 6" to 10" in sandy red clay. Thanks for looking and commenting.

In my humble opinion, IMHO.

The Grommets are hard to put a date of use title on , as they were made basically the same way for many years , even to this day (but usually made of Aluminum) these days .

If they were dug right where other genuine Civil War relics were dug then 'I'd' say the chance is good they were of Civil War use.

I have found similar ones in a CW camp site & at a couple other Civil war sites, got some found with dropped Minnies that were made differently Sooo???

I have also found Brass ones in back yards / Modern 1950-2017 Campgrounds .As I stated newer ones from I guess the 1970's on are mostly aluminum . But can be Brass on High Quality Items.

I'd Guess the ones yr buddy found are 1860?- 1950's???.

But
I learn more everyday, as for the Knife , tough call for me so IDK:icon_scratch:
Oh. & For the other round piece 'Above my knowledge level'.:BangHead:

I know all the chatter don't help much so maybe somebody more knowledgeable will chime in.
God Bless

Thanks Davers, Actually that is great information on the grommets. I will pass this along to him. I will be going with him this weekend to search some more so maybe we can find a 3 ringer with other stuff to help put a timeline together. Thanks again.

Nice finds!

I found all these in a 10'x2' oval. ~1.3"od, 0.6"id. Some show like they might have been in a fire. Coolest thing is that they all have a "5" stamped on either on the face, on the back, or both. And found amongst CW rounds. If you look at grommets 1,3 & 4, you can see the "5" stamp. If you end up finding some kind of marking, I'd like to know.

I remember him saying some of his had the number 5on his. He also said his were found all in a very small area. Weird huh. I hope I am wrong but you don't think they might have wrapped a killed soilder in a tarp and buried him in a shallow grave? Just looking at the similarities.

Cool!
I never noticed any #'s on mine ,but I did not look that close.

Many seasoned Civil War Relic hunter might say " Oh that's just a 25 cent Grommet" but to me they are SUPER COOL! finds as is anything Brass.
Ill have to do some looking to check the grommet's I found for #'s.....I need a Relic Room BAD! lol

Great imagination , & a possible scenario.

That makes these finds Cool 'We never Know'.

I doubt the ones I found were used for burial because I dug them all at 3-5". That's the same depth as other CW time period finds in that area. I would say they're from a tent or such. The "5" is probably just a index for a certain size grommet.

dont know how long that knife is but it looks more like a pike to me. very cool find!

Pike..... Hmmm Thanks. It is just under 14 inches long. Without rust I would guess 13.75 inches. LOL

I thought it may be a Door Hinge but I don't see any holes in the piece for the Hardware.

I was thinking PIKE also...
I've also dug the gromits with numbers on them and I'm in Cali so not much in the Civil War, but plenty in the Gold Rush.
