Hi All My TH'ing Friends

I was searching in a hay field in Brandy Station, VA yesterday (8/2/2008) I received a signal that was in the half dollar-quarter size range at 5+ inches on my Whites DFX. As I search in coin mode I never think of any of my targets being coins and this of course was no exception. After cutting my six inch plug I pulled a half dollar sized thin brass with lead back US pin. It is just a tad bit larger than a US half dollar. I have looked through several on my reference books but the closest items I have found are bridle rosettes. In the reference book 'Civil War Artifacts A Guide for the Historian' by Howard R. Crouch, page 133, item 3, is about the closest item I have been able to locate so far. The letters are different and the reverse is three brass wires not the single wire as shown in item 7. I hope someone is able to positively ID this nice item.

My thanks to all for looking and I am awaiting your thoughts.
Happy TH'ing and remember stay safe in all you do!

I do believe that's an "epaulet circlet"

Is it 1 7/8" diameter?

Made of brass and worn on top of the epaulet within the crescent.  This was not a widely used insignia.Normally they are embroidered...   and have the regiment number.

Maybe it's something else?  LOL... I'm guessing  :) I'm basing it off the three light-weight prongs used for clothing.

Hi All My TH'ing Friends
The diameter is 1 and 3/8 inches. It is lead backed. Hope this helps.

I am gonna agree with Gypsy. I think it is a bridal or horse tack rosette...d2

If its bridal or horse tact, how would it hold up to heavy use in the field with those small wire attachment hooks. Just asking.

I am going to stay with rosette as its lead backed....and I being the authority on 'lead' would know...LOL.....

When did lead move into the rust category?

Just having fun...always thought Gypsy was the authority on rust...

I'm going with epaulette circle since the attachments match up...I've never heard of brass attachments for a rosette--even though they are usually lead-backed.

It is a little small for a rosette, to be honest. I'll look through my resources and see if I can find anything...
