Citrine?

Found on the beach of Lake Michigan (WI side). Its rounded smooth but I did get it to scratch a glass plate but could not get it to scratch quartz, no streak.

Amber won't scratch glass. It's chalcedony/carnelian agate like niffler said

I should have considered Carnelian agate more because the small pits on it, I dont think Citrine would have those.. Thx much.

I think the General Shape, and pitting, along with the Glassy Appearance and color is key.

In this case, hardness is key. Tektite is soft. His test indicates chalcedony, per hardness.

Looks like agate. (same thing basically as chaceldony.)

I think it's glass. Chalcedony (quartz) would have scratched the quartz. Remember, like scratches like; therefore, it can't be chalcedony. If it were chalcedony though, it is extremely high quality with that translucency. It's beautiful regardless.

Great timing Rasputin! I just got a set of hardness picks the other day in the mail to better(more accurately) test hardness of the rocks I have been collecting. I just now did a re test with the picks after seeing your post. A #8 pick scratches the specimen but a #7 does not, same results go on the quartz I had been using. Thx much.

It's the first time I've heard of "like scratches like", and it does not coincide with my experience at all.
I've multiple times hardness tested 2 pieces of quartz and haven't gotten a scratch on either. There might be some "abrasive" action, from the sharp corners, but no scratching.
