Circa 1750s House Renovation Coppers!! KGII & KGIII Need help ID'Ing

Hello all,

Here are two coppers found during a 1750s house renovation. The homeowner cleaned them before I could say not too!! I'll probably retone them at some point. I need some help from you copper experts attributing them.

The King George Half Pence:
7.8g
28mm
Dateless but with the head it is pre 1740 I guess?

The King George III Half Pence:
6.1g
27/28mm
Dateless and has to be an imitation.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Where those found in the house?

I ask cause an amish guy I know, was renovating his house, and found a Large cent in the wall above the door, I forget what year it was but it was early, 1820's maybe and in AU condition. He figures it must of been a good luck thing.

They're clean alright !
Browse around & see if you can match that george 111,
looks like enough detail on ribbon & bust to ID.
Hope it's a rare find

These were under the floor when work was being done to the joist. I've seen ones found in houses, usually during renovation, that were place close to the entrance of the house.. above the door.. in the stairway post in a foyer. From what I understand, they should be from as close to the date of the building of the house as possible. I also heard they were for good luck, had something to do with keeping witches away like hex symbols?? Ironically, when I was stripping 200+ years of paint off of my doors, I found a small hex symbol carved into the wood!! Pretty cool! I'm not sure how much of this is just told for the story?? versus turning out to be true.. It would be nice, I'd love to find a nice George II in my house! ;-)

Yeah, the cleaning killed me! I've checked my "source".. Breens... and search for images via google but could not match it up. Some would be close on the likeness of George but the legend and periods would be different.. I figured some of those New England guys would know it off the top of there heads! ;-)

"I also heard they were for good luck, had something to do with keeping witches away like hex symbols".

That's exactly why they were put in the houses in the first place, so put them back for goodness sake! :laughing7:

Both are counterfeits, the first is an old head George II (so not an early date) and looks cast. There's not really much more you need to know because both would be considered very common to counterfeit collectors. The George III is probably 1775.

Thanks IP.. I'm ID'ing them for the homeowner.. they care way more about the historical aspect then any value. These will go in a display case for them. I wished they had not been cleaned but what can you do?
