My wife and I purchased our house about 5 years ago.

From time to time throughout the years, I have smelled what I believe to be cigarette smoke in the house. (usually very late at night and VERY strong, but for short periods of time) I have made several comments to my wife about it....

My wife and I are non-smokers, my neighbors on each side are non-smokers.

So.....where am I going with this?

I purchased a book called "Heaven and Earth" by James Van Praagh

The book states:

Pay attention to the odors around you. When a deceased loved one wants to communicate with you, it is quite common to smell something associated with him or her. Perhaps it is the aroma of a woman's perfume or a particular brand of cigarettes. Often these scents are dismissed by our logical minds as some lingering, stale aroma around the house. In actuality, spirits do try to comfort their loved ones through scent. I often respond by saying " If you smell a loved one's perfume, she is definitely close by."

I have lost an Aunt and a Grandfather.....both were very heavy smokers.

What do you make of that? Have they "visited" me...or am I imagining things?

I would say you were visited by one or both of those folks. A few years ago, I would occasionally smell cigarette smoke and I figured it was my uncle who smoked unfiltered Pall-Malls all of his life. He died of throat cancer in my bedroom. A friend of my Mother was a smoker, too , and passed over several years ago. But, her smell is usually blueberry cobbler. She used a strong peppermint smell to say, "Hi" to my Mother and I one day when we were about to leave the cemetery where she's buried. We'd been talking about peppermint candy a few minutes earlier. I'd asked my Mom if she had any for my Dad, who was riding with us. It was the last time he was able to do any travelling, before he passed over. Anyway, my Mom told me that no, she didn't have any with her; she'd forgot to put any in her purse before leaving home. As I started to drive away from the parking area at the cemetery, a very strong peppermint smell pasted through the car. I commented that she (my Mom) must have found a piece in her purse and she said, no she hadn't. BOTH of us smelled that peppermint and agreed that Mrs. Mitchell was saying "Thanks for the flowers."

Familiar smells is the way spirits can say "hello" fast and easily.
