It is a 1928 (yr 17) 1-yuan Chinese silver coin. Coin is from Kansu province.

For some reason it looks more Japanese to me.

The coin is not Japanese. It is a 1-yuan (dollar) Chinese silver coin from the year 17 (1928). It is from the province of Kansu (Gansu).
