That is actually a tobbaco pipe,opium was smoked completly differently... know there are links on line that say different,but they are wrong.
We actually dig more of this type than we do any other.Often times the mouth piece is nearby as well!

Opium was smoked in a much larger pipe, that was made of several different components. The "bowl" shaped portion, known as a charger, was generally made of pottery or ceramic, and sat upon a metal saddle (brass, copper, or sometimes even silver) that connected this "bowl" to the shaft or stem, often made of bamboo or other organic material. The smaller one-piece brass or copper alloy smoking pipes of the 19th Century were in fact used to smoke tobacco. Many of the artifacts associated with Chinese culture have been misidentified over the years.
