I actually found this a few days ago at my Brother in-laws house in Whitefish MT. His house was built in 1919. Whitefish was originally a railroad town so I'm sure there were quite a few Chinese railroad workers around. Anyway, when I found it, it was covered in mud and I didn't notice the designs on it. I threw it in my junk bucket. Today, I was looking through the bucket and took another look at this thing. I noticed all the oriental designs on it. I was wondering what it is and when it was made. I think I'll try to heat it up and bend it back into shape. It also needs some soldering repair. Its a cool little container regardless.

Thanks for any help.

Evan

I'm Leaning towards Japanese........GREAT FIND

SEMPER FI :sunny:

I'm thinking Chinese given the location... railroad workers could have brought that with while laying track to Kalispell.

It IS possibly Japanese and brought back as a military momento after WW I.

Just guessing...

I thought that looked awfully familiar. If you want to be sure it's a matchsafe, look for a striking strip on the bottom for those old fashioned farmer matches.

Check the internet, there is a group that collect match safes and are quite good at dating them. I would really be interested in the date on that one. Nice find.
