Chigger bites.

That would mean a 500 hundred mile drive. LOL. I think I'll deal with them right at home.
 

Anyway you look at it chiggers suck bad! I hated those things in Texas and Oklahoma!!!

I hate Chiggers.
Chiggers are not like Ticks. They don't hang on. They bite you and then they are gone. They don't hang around on you like the old wive's tale leads everyone to believe. Basically if the area itchs, the Chigger is more than likely not there anymore. If I am not mistaken the adult Chigger can't even bite a human.
The only thing you can do is put something on it to calm the itching.

It's best to make sure you don't pick up any Chiggers when you go into areas were they are present.

That's my understanding too.
But once they spit that crap in ya, you itch for days. :(

I can't believe I picked blackberries Saturday and didn't get any or any ticks.

Of course being allergic to blackberries didn't help when all those thorn scratches raised up.

aw man chiggers suck! ive been lucky this year and havent gotten into them. i had them real bad last year though. those little bastards can make life miserable.

I have got into the worst chiggers this past summer. I think they must drink from a nuclear waste site. I can be driving down the road and the "itch" will hit me like a truck. I have to pull off the side of the road and start scratching my ankles. If I had a wire brush I would use it to scratch with! I have tried all the meds and folk remedies I can think of but NOTHING works. I sprayed automotive starting fluid on one spot in desperation one day at work it burned like fire but it was better than the itch. Any suggestions because I will be back in the field where the little buggers are waiting for me today. Its like the old cartoon where the mosquitos attack the man on his front porch like a air force unit for those who remember that one. Great cartoon!

My favorite all time remedy is to take a slice of raw potato and just hold it on the bite. Supposedly it draws the poison out. Kinda stings if the skin is raw, but it does seem to help.

2nd fave remedy is to put a little emu oil on the bite. Emu oil is really incredible - not cheap, but darn good stuff.

Think it just has to run its course. Put on some anti-itch and it should help.

Glad they like you KFB, it might keep them away from me. I think Dorian, probably just put some itching powder in your jock strap when you weren't looking. ;D Or, maybe BB brought something strange back from Amsterdam errrrr or Austria. :P

I heard that too, but I heard that from a person who told me that chiggers burrow into your skin and stay there :-\ the acrylic nail polish then suffocates them and kills them. But everyone on here is of the opinion that they just bite and leave. I'm not really sure which is correct. I have never gotten into any of them, hard to believe as common as they are in Va, but then I barely ever get bitten at all, maybe I small bad to bugs! :)

Chigger bites
Chiggers are tiny mites found in tall grass and weeds. They attach to your skin with their little claws and feed on juices inside your skin cells. After a few days, they fall off, leaving behind an itchy, red welt where they attached. Even with treatment, redness and intense itching can last several weeks for each bite.

Over-the-counter treatments may temporarily relieve itching. If your skin appears infected or if bites appear to be spreading to other parts of your body, see your doctor. He or she may recommend additional treatment, such as antihistamines or antibiotics

I know from experience, nylons work. NO, I don't make a practice of wearing them whenever I go detecting. I use to live in Arkansas, and my yard was wicked with them. Got them everytime I mowed. Then a coworker suggested wearing nylons, so I said what the heck. Tried it and it worked. As long as your wearing jeans, who the heck is going to know anyway.

unseen nylons............chiggers..............unseen nylons...............chiggers. Choice is pretty easy.

Or, wait until fall to detect those areas.
 

I don't know if anybody else has this happen; if I go out and haven't gotten a tan yet I get attacked by skeeters and chiggers. Once I have developed a tan, they leave me alone. Don't know why but that's the way it is.
