Found a ton of these muchrooms in the woods today. Are they chicken of the woods? If so, should I give it a shot and fry them up?

I'm not a mushroom expert, just a guy who has seen several of those in the woods., but that's what it looks like to me. I have never eaten one. If you do eat it, proceed with caution. (Note: This is not a recommendation.)

that looks more like a hen of the woods i have eaten them you can eat both if you do very small piece at a time till your sure thats what it is be very carefull

Thanks, guys! I'll do more research before I attempt to eat some of it

if you think you have a positive id and it is eatable just rub a small piece on your lips first and see if they have any weird Sunsations. proceed with caution. Ive mushroom hunted for years and can only positively identify 6 or 8 different kinds around were i live. chicken and hen of the woods dont have to many look alikes.

someone said its called summer paneale , or wood paneale , not particularly tasty . ( Hey Tim I'm in R.I. , looking to hunt somewhere , pm me if interested )

I'm surely not going to tell you to eat a mushroom by looking at a pic . BUT what you have is black stain polypore. not chicken of the woods , not even the right color for chicken , too early for hen of the woods , they are found in the fall. I eat black stain polypore fried , the lighter color fringe is the edible part of a black stain polypore. the rest is like chewing rubber or leather. I suggest you do some research and not ask random relic hunters about wild edibles as some mushrooms are deadly . may I suggest a YouTube channel called LEARN YOUR LAND. the guy knows his chit.

I am doing research. Asking opinions here and doing research online. I am very cautious when it comes to mushrooms. Not worth getting sick or dying over a snack!

If it is black stain polypore they are very good eating and good for you as well .

Imagine the mushroom began hollering instead of clucking and that's how you knew it wasn't Chicken of the Wood but George of the Jungle - a much rarer and more expensive delicacy.

I saw a program on TV about a Korean family that came to the USA, and went into the woods behind their house, they found some wild mushrooms in the woods that looked just like mushrooms from Korea so they picked them and ate them, ... They were NOT, and 2 family died and one had to have a liver transplant and 2 survived after a lengthy hospital stay.. I would never eat mushrooms I did not know for sure were safe, I'd rather eat tree bark...

Sorry to say but this does NOT look like the pictures in the link
that's because it's not . I told him what it is . it's a black stain polypore. I agree if you don't know what you have you should stick to store bought foods , as a side note , many tree barks are poisonous . I eat foods from the forest year round and have never been sick from it .

It's a good idea asking questions. Once you get a positive ID on chicken of the woods...you will enjoy picking and eating them. I pick and eat them along with sheephead(hen of the woods) . My father always picked popinki mushrooms and they were delicious but I am not 100% on their ID so I don't take chances with them. The spring morels are the best but hard to find in my area.
