Pocket Spill,

Nice silver! It is getting harder and harder to find silver at most of the city's parks, as they have been hunted by detectorists since detectors have been around. I find it a challenge to find any silver at most parks. Some parks give up more silver because they are older and in the less friendly parts of town. I have found a few silver quarters in parks myself this year. How deep was it?

Keep it up!

Joe

Awesome find!!!

Joe,
The quarter was only about 3 inches deep. It was in a little grove of trees void of any grass. Found a clad dime about 5 yards from it that was also about 3 inches deep. This area of the park is so littered with bottle caps, pull tabs and other trash that I have to operate with the discrimination set pretty high where I found the quarter. With such settings I am not going to find any 8 inch deep targets but in some areas the bottle caps that you can literally see all over the ground make it impossible to detect without discrimination.

Looks like you and TF had some good finds today at a heavily hunted site. If the rain stays away I will be trying another Chicago park in the morning.

PS,

I know what you mean when you refer to those areas just littered with bottle caps and pull tabs. I've got to admit, I sometimes avoid those areas to avoid headaches! As have others, and that's why you found the quarter and others hadn't.

TF and I have been hunting this particular place in the woods for about...five months now. When I first started hunting there, I knew about the stories of guys detecting there for years, cleaning the place up. Sometimes certain guys will say things to you to keep you out of "their" areas. Or maybe they really thought it was hunted out...which doesn't say much for their detecting skills/strategy. Whatever the case may be, it has proven to be a great place to find oldies, complete with poison ivy, stickies (burrs), thorn shrubs, mosquitoes, ticks, and all the good things that come with hunting in the thickets!

Good luck on your hunt today.

Joe

Thanks Joe,
Today I hunted south of Belmont between regular Lake Shore Drive and Inner Lake Shore Drive. Only old coin was a 1951-D wheatie and found about 30 clad coins.
