I just ran across something interesting on the local newspaper website.Listed in the classifieds under "Announcements & Events" in subsection "Public/Legal notices" was a legal notice for a hearing for the request of two historical houses to be torn down on the east side of town.It lists the addresses of the demo site and the names of the parties involved (owners).Right now i'm in the process of "looking up" these two gentlemen to obtain permission to search these sites before the houses are torn down in a couple of weeks.Wish me luck.

Yes I check the local paper all the time for the same kind of stories. I also look for stories on fairs, carnivals, road construction stc. Has worked for me.....

Keep diggin

Oh, and Good Luck......

I haven't done that, but have heard of others doing it. Good Luck!!

I also check to see where and when the local fire dept. is going to do some training burns on old houses. They list the block and street that it's going to occur. Usually it's pretty easy to get permission from the Fire Marshal before they light things up. Then you can go back after the burn both before and after they raze the lot.

Mind hunter, "city property", eh? well you should still inquire at city hall, the mayor, etc..... Be sure to show up with a shovel in hand, talking about valuable relics, release of liability waivers, etc... lest they not fully understand your intentions ;D If you don't do this, then it's people like YOU who bring a bad name to our hobby. Tsk tsk

sounds like a good idea---sometimes you gotta think a bit "outside the box" to get some "fresh sites" to work on --- Ivan

I have checked the library for local maps dated as far back as they have.
Usually the older maps even have the listings of the name of the owner of the few houses that were there in that timeframe. I can also see the parks and waterways that were in the early maps and compare them to todays maps.
Then I will detect these sites and usually do well.

I check Local Papers all the time.

Even the Church Going's on's.

& Obits.
