I helped one of my friends move some stuff around in a old house he just bought. He said that he found these two silver dollars in a old desk and wanted to know if I wanted them (he knows I`m into coins). I offered him $30 for them and he said that sounded fair because the 1877S silver dollar was cut and turned into a locket of some sorts and probably was not worth much. So after I got them I checked it out closer and the trade dollar looks real as far as I can tell and it opens up with a woman's picture inside. Does anyone know what something like this is worth? Is it worth less than the value of the actual coin? I do not see copy anywhere on the coin and it looks like worn silver. By the way the other coin is a 1922S peace dollar.

that sure is pretty but I think it is a novelty piece......I would still love to have it - that peace dollar is pretty too.

The highest value (not monetary) you might receive is to locate and return the piece to any living relative of the woman in the pic. Without damaging the pic, can you see if anything might be written on the back side?

I don`t know if it is a novelty item. I went on ebay and looked at some of the fake ones and they look different. Anyway on the back of the picture it says my wife Sept 3rd 1891.

The trade dollar is worth from $125 to $150 according to red book.

Who cares what its worth. Stick a picture of your no.1 wish list item in place of the photo & keep it in your pocket for luck

I`m not sure if I am the one who needs my eyes checked. Or maybe it is just the crappy picture. Here is another.

I count 6 stars on the left 7 on the right and both sides are pointing up head and eagle if it was a true Silver Dollar if the Liberty Head was pointing up then the eagle would be upside down on the reverse a nice piece but it is Fake ...

I know that the sides need to be reversed, they are! If you flip the coin over the eagle is upside down (I did not want to take a upsidedown picture) ???, but that does not matter anyway because it was turned into a locket and the top flips up and is connected to a hinge. I think JOHNDOE was refering to the points on the stars. I don`t know if it is real or not, but nobody has proven to me that it is fake either. Not that anyone has to prove anything. I still like it

Looks real to me, lots of coins were turned into jewelry back in the day.

That is very interesting. Thank You PBK

On the reverse, between AMERICA and the wing, it looks like it probably said replica.
Oh you are back from Lenscrafters already. I checked those marks with my loupe and they are just marks. I think you are pulling at straws . I think it is time to give up ;D
