I found this button at a old house site, and have found several other military buttons there previously. It's about the size of a Quarter, and has Hayden written on the back. Is it military or Civilian? Thanks for the help.

Since it begins with the name "Hayden," this would appear to be one of the various backmarks used by Hayden, Gregg & Company of Charleston, SC. Nathaniel and Sidney Hayden and William Gregg were jewelers, silversmiths, and military goods dealers. The firm was established in 1838. After Nathaniel left in 1843, Augustus H. Hayden joined the other two partners and the firm continued until 1852, when Gregg left. Augustus then teamed up with William G. Whilden to form Hayden & Whilden in 1855. I'm not certain how long they remained in business.
