I did NOT find this today. I actually found this over a month ago at a house built in 1846. I dug this as my last signal of the night. Thought it was a piece of trash since it was in clay rather than soil and the clay was stuck to it pretty good.

Brought it home and started cleaning it up along with everything else I found and this is what I discovered.

Now I have no clue what it is and I don't know that it is really all the great a find but I thought it was unusual enough to post for others to look at.

I like the piece and will keep it with my other finds that I chose to display. As you can see by the picture it is very thin. It is Bronze or Copper it did have very little patina on it but I put just a very light coat of Renaissance Wax on it to take pictures. After I let the piece sit for a hour it is back to it's dug condition.....

Hope you like it, I know I do.

Wow, I have no clue what it is but I like it too! Is that a giesha?

I second that observation.. looks like a stylized representation of a Japanese Giesha to me too. Maybe some kind of trade token? or an advertisement perhaps?

Speaking of Giesha's, not that this has ANYthing to do with your nifty find there, but was in Manhatten on Saturday, and saw a Giesha walking into a very expensive hotel on 56th st. Sooooo, I guess it's true what they say about NYC, you can find ANYTHING there!

in the late 1800 post civil war to early 1900 time frame "foreign" countries were of great interest to many americans -- places like japan and eygpt held great interest and many items were made using those "themes"

I really love this find!!! Congrats!

 RR

I wonder if it's part of a lid to an opium box. . .I think someone posted one one time that had a Japanese themed lid on it?
