Thanks Breezie - would she have been working for Chanel design wise? and why 929?

Look at the number again with a loop to see if the mark is 925, which is the standard for Sterling silver. It means that 925 parts out of 1,000 are pure silver. :) Breezie

it is definitely a nine - (929) I know on many cheap silver pieces the 925 is poorly stamped - but if you look with a loupe or enlarge the pic - 9 it is and the stamp is clear / well defined. I also wondered why SMS would design using a Chanel logo if not commissioned by them? Strange piece and I am wishing I had a test kit.

My suggestions at this time would be to contact Sarah Merrill Sampson from the website I posted earlier; there is a contact area. Send her pics, and ask for confirmation on the piece. Secondly, I'd have it tested at the local pawn shop for sterling or buy a test kit.

Keep us updated. :) Breezie

I'd think Ms Sampson would use that beautiful SMS hallmark on all her work if it were hers.
The R should mean the mark is a registered trademark, though I can't find any matches.
of course the letters 'SMS' are used in a lot of applications besides a jewelers MM,
making a general search difficult.
the style of the piece in question does not resemble any of her original displayed works,
It appears to be a well made piece, but it's not genuine Chanel.
Maybe it's the photo, but the metal looks 'off ' to me. ???

Looking forward to seeing what this piece really is :) thanks for posting !

After sleeping on this pendant, I've had other thoughts: #1 "If" this is a legitamate trademark stamp, it will be listed under Trademark companies by the government. Below is a Trademark search page, but since I'm back at work in my shop after a wonderful Christmas vacation, I don't have time to search through the 37 pages for SMS. #2 The trademark could be MSS since the M is at the top. #3 I agree with Will, the look is off to me; it could be steel so check it with a magnet. Does the weight feel right for silver? What does your metal detector register? #4 There are sooooooo many 'knock-off' companies who copy the real deals. I've seen the fake Coach leather pocketbooks that can't be determined from the real ones, so this might be a copy design made with silver or not. Several years ago, we had a fellow come in our shop selling men's 14k gold diamond rings. They were all marked 14k and the stones looked clear, BUT they had been fake stamped and the stones were CZs. The fastest and easiest way to determine the content, is take it to a pawn shop today, and then let us know what they said.

Here is a TRADEMARK search page; of course there are others, so take some time to see if you can find the Registered Trademark to see if it is authentic.
