As some of you remember, I found this beautiful buckle a few years ago. My goal is to positively ID who the "Champion Batsman" was represented on the face of the buckle. There is a registry mark stamped onto the reverse of the buckle but it is stamped backwards. I figured out how to reverse the image and the picture shows what it should look like. I found these two British Keys to their "Design Registry System" for the years 1842-1867 & 1868-1883. The registry mark on my buckle fits close with the later legend except for the parcel number (c) and year of manufacture (d). According to the legend, there should be a number but on mine there is an "A". Where the year of manufacture should be I can't make out. The rest all fit...class of material (a) is I which is metal, day of the month (b) is 13, and month of the year (e) is K which is November. According to these legends an Rd should be in the middle , but mine is definitely just an R.

Are there any other registry marks from other countries that are close? If it is British, did they switch numbers & letters around? I am thinking that this is from the year 1871. If this is true, this would also fit with everything else I have found from this site.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This is how my stamp reads using both legends:

Registry mark used 1842 - 1867 ___________ Registry mark used 1868 - 1883
(a)...class of material - I___________________(a)...class of material - I
(b)...year of manufacture - 13 _____________ (b)...day of month - 13
(c)...month of the year - A ________________ (c)...parcel or bundle number -A
(d)...day of the month - ? _________________(d)...year of manufacture - ?
(e)...parcel or bundle number - K ____________(e)...month of the year - K

As you can see from the 1st picture, the year of manufacture and bundle number do not correlate with either legend?

I doubt that the actual portrait on your clasp represents a particular cricketing figure, rather just a award for the top batsman of the season, but a very nice clasp all the same.

Hello Ironman,

Definitely a British Registry mark. Here's the site I've used: Dating_English_Registry_Marks

I'm too blind to make out the impressed marks on your buckle, alas...

surf - Thanks for the link! It is definitely more user friendly for these eyes!! The reference I have been using from one of my many books, the printing is small but the info. does concur with the link you provided!!! W.G. Grace is who I am leaning to and have been researching...man what a player!!!!!!!!!

Also, after looking at the link and my reference they both concur that in each of the two legends my stamp has two markings different. On each of the legends I have a number where the year of manufacture should have a letter & for the bundle number I have a letter, which should be a number?

Thanks for the confirmation SS! I wasn't sure if it was an actual representation of the top batsman or just a generic portrait. If the top batsman for this clasp is W. G. Grace that portrait just wasn't growing a beard!! LOL Thanks again for the info. and kudo!!!!!

A lovely buckle and one that creates a quandary in deciphering a correctly attributed Registry Mark. 8-)

Why the mark would be stamped backwards, defies logic at this point. :icon_scratch:

With this item bearing the diamond shaped mark, we can determine that this type of marking dates prior to the change in 1883, whereupon the Registry Markings changed to a simple Rd. No. followed by the assigned number.

A close study of the mark in your photo, appears to my viewpoint as a I5 in the (b) location, rather than a 13.

The R in the center, signifying Registered, should have a smaller "D" or "d" following. There are variations noted though, comparing other Registry Marks, where the size, style, and relative location of the abbreviated letter changes.

The center marking appears to be similar to this, with the small D in close under the large top loop of the letter R.

Thanks for the links CC, I will add them to my file on registry marks! I can see from the picture how the day of month looks like a 15 but when I look at the original marking on the buckle with a loupe, I am pretty sure I am seeing a 3. I attached a pic. of what I think I am seeing. Also the symbol in question to the right of the R has a crease where it looks like the number would have a line on that side like a 1 or double digit number. Looking through the loupe it looks like it could be a 2 or 5? Whenever we get together for another adventure I'll bring it with me for you to peruse all you want. Especially with a better seeing pair of eyes!! I also am not seeing a d next to the R for the trademark symbol but it is probably tucked in there where you think you see it! Thanks for going the extra mile to do some research on this for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
