The following came from the ocean but close to shore. The chain seems to me like it might be old and I would like if someone could give an idea of age. The links are a little over two inches long.

The spike, I am not sure if it is a spike or what. It seems to be metallic. Has a metallic ring to it when tapped. But it is not affected by a magnet at all and is very light. It is about four inches long. I don't have any idea what it migth be otherwise.

All ideas appreciated.

The chain doesn't look old but the spike thing does. What kind of reading do you get on a MD?

It is inexpensive galvanized chain that used to be used a lot on dog tie-outs. Looks like you found it all.

I agree with Daryl & Jim, but after looking at it twice it could be a chain from an animal trap...just thinking.

Looks like a chain off of a Lobster Trap. However, just suggesting that in order to start trouble.

Anthony - You son-of-a....

Hey - any chance with that weight and chain it was used for decoys? Or maybe a temporary floating marker?
Or part of a heavy-duty down-rigger?

Don't you know nothing Jim?

Weight was to knock out the lobsters.

Dog Tie Down Chain? I mean who would tie their dog on the surf? Michael Vick?

OK, I buy into the idea that the chain is not old. I can throw that rusty crud out.

As for the other whatzit, thanks for the very relevant question. It gives a very faint response, about the same as a 2mm diameter 20k gold bead - not very much, especially for its size. After carefully testing that out, ( I didn't remember what the response was like when I found it) I am tentatively concluding that that item is not made of metal, but may simply have some mineralization that causes the response.

Thanks for all the comments and humor.
