Hi all,

I am posting this from my phone so if the pic needs resized or something I apologize. I found this about 5 inches down in a known colonial location. It has three sets of links holding the end sections to the two middle sections. Made of copper.

Thanks for looking,
Kevo

I don't know what it is, but it's really cool. Maybe used in place of a pocket watch chain?

I have alternately thought that, a watch band, or an ornate garter strap. I just don't know? Note that it has a smaller eye on one side.

Kevo, it looks like a Victorian cloak chain. I look forward to seeing it cleaned-up. GREAT find, Breezie

Awesome Breezie. Thanks a bunch.
I'm actually a little nervous about cleaning it. I don't generally clean gold or silver and any buttons I generally use aluminum jelly. But this thing I'm deathly afraid of ruining. It still flexes well and all the links are there. I'll probably just try some peroxide and call it done.

I don't think I'd use peroxide if you think it is gold. I know gold comes out of the ground the way it goes in, but I've seen some funky looking gold that has been exposed to certain elements. I'd soak it in warm soapy water, and use a soft tooth brush to get off the surface dirt. After that, you may find a marking on it. If it is marked, I'd have it professionally cleaned by a jeweler. It may be gold or it could be brass with gilt. It's a beautiful piece! Breezie

Peroxide will not damage gold gilding. That is the best "touchless" way to get the dirt off of a gold or gold gilded item. Cool find! This one is gold plated. I think it may be a fob or a metal chain for a medallion.
