Chain and Ring

My wife and I found this near Natchez Mississippi. I tend to think it looks like something that would be connected with horses somehow. Any ideas on what it went to?

I have an old drawn/pulled sickle mower that has a chain end like that to hold the blade at certain heights but a end like that could go to many different things I think. Find it in a field?

It was at the bottom of a man made levee near a wooded area with a dirt road leading to a lake. Come to think of it there could have been a gate there at some point.

it could of been for that latching or locking them.

Could be from a leg trap.
