Re: ceramic whiskey thingy

Not sure but it looks like it could have been a tap handle, did they have whiskey on tap?

that is what i thought but dont know if whiskey comes on tap. :icon_scratch: There was a restaurant and bar used by fisherman and yacht owners, burned down in 50's, at this waterfront location.

Yes it did AND that is what it is...

See the "GHT" for Draught on the ceramic piece...

Nice piece of history BigCy

Nick
i think the "ght" is for strai"ght" whiskey. I think this restaurant was popular in the 20's. I wish i could go back and dig but i cant find the spot again. :'( Area is covered with mangroves amd is different because of some recent bridgework. I would love to find it. I dug some nice 1800 items as well.

I found many plates all sizes with this blue marlin on it. Anyone care to date?

Re: ceramic whiskey thingy

straight whisky is pure one grain whisky----( not a mixed multi grain type "known" as" blended whisky" like canadian club) -- a modern straight whiskey--- would be ---- wild turkey straight rye* whiskey 101 proof (my favorite ) not the borbon style wild turkey either .

101 proof whiskey on tap, yachts, blue marlins, South Florida in the 20's....sounds like paradise. ;D

Re: ceramic whiskey thingy

uh many booze suppliers -- promoted both beer and booze -- just cuz you supplied one didn't mean you didn't sell the other too. --- often both were supplied thru the same "local" supplier --- boilermakers ---a shot of whisky with a beer chaser was common back in the days of hard drinking waterman types in the 20's and 30's --- as they would see the name on the pouring measure on the bottle as their beer was being pulled --- the ideal was ---they would see the whisky name and say and gimme a shot of ??????? brand whisky to go with tje beer .( at least thats the ideal) -- having a name on the pour measure it also help sort out the bottles so the bartender knew one from the other without having to lift them to see the labels as well as controlling the amount serbed --making sure the owner of the bar got 25 "shots" per fifth of booze bought --stopping heavy handed bartenders from over pouring in hopes of a big tip for making "stiff" drinks --thus screwing over the bar owner.

humm plate would be 1881 or after that since thats the est. date on it for mayer china

The only place I have seen whiskey on tap is in europe...Most a nice Single Malt... :occasion14:

But that's not to say it never happened in USA...

I'm sticking with my opinion...

PS looks like Rittenhouse is alive and well...http://www.whiskymag.com/whisky/brand/rittenhouse/whisky1228.html
Here is an excerpt from Mark Twain's autobiography mentioning local corn whisky on tap.
http://209.85.215.104/search?q=cach...5422+"whisky+on+tap"&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=3&gl=us

There were two stores in the village. My uncle, John A. Quarles, was proprietor of one of them. It was a very small establishment, with a few rolls of "bit" calicoes on half a dozen shelves; a few barrels of salt mackerel, coffee and New Orleans sugar behind the counter; stacks of brooms, shovels, axes, hoes, rakes and such things here and there; a lot of cheap hats, bonnets and tinware strung on strings and suspended from the walls; and at the other end of the room was another counter with bags of shot on it, a cheese or two and a keg of powder; in front of it a row of nail kegs and a few pigs of lead, and behind it a barrel or two of New Orleans molasses and native corn whisky on tap. If a boy bought five or ten cents' worth of anything he was entitled to half a handful of sugar from the barrel; if a woman bought a few yards of calico she was entitled to a spool of thread in addition to the usual gratis "trimmin's"; if a man bought a trifle he was at liberty to draw and swallow as big a drink of whisky as he wanted.

Re: ceramic whiskey thing & plate found

ah "straight" rye whisky --- bottled in bond --means its 100 proof at least *(bottled after being tested for proof by govt inspectors)-- so called "uninspected whiskys" --- like jim bean , jack danials and others gain favor later on being only 80 proof they were cheaper to make / sell.

SWR nailed it ---a pour measure that goes unto the bottle of boozes neck to give "a measured shot" of booze.

with no note 3 digit "code" on the plate---- the plate was pre 1950 (when they started using the code)-- could go back as far back as 1881 (when they were est. according to the plate back -- checking for the "blue marlin" design pattern might help in nailing down the time frame closer)
