Centered text in the title column

I have to say that I'm not a big fan of the new title column's format. Centering the text makes the column difficult to read. Very long titles tend to obscure the shorter titles due to the natural tendency to start at the leftmost edge when reading. The column also looks tattered due to the rough edge caused by inconsistent title lengths. I'm not sure why this change was made. Was there a good reason why the formatting was changed so that the title text is now centered instead of being left justified? As a web programmer myself, I can say with confidence that it is not standard to take long text fields and center them in column formatted data.
