Looks like a Roman Aes of Emperor Claudius. See pic for a similar coin. Looks like the fertilizer got to you coin. Still a cool find!

Is the Diameter of your coin about 27mm?

Wow :o What a nice coin! Is this authentic? Is it from copper? Could it be that a 2000 years old coin can be found in such good condition?

The Diameter of mine is exact 27mm. Seems this is a match. Looks very nice, if only mine were in better condition... If soil did that, than i dont have much chance to find any in better condition like that. I still have a huge area to search with my MD, so i will see... some silver would be nice. And about cleaning... i shoud leave it in this condition !?

If i found it in better condition, what is the worth of such coin?

Regards

The example I posted sold at auction for $289.00 on October 17th, 2005. It is certainly authentic and is bronze (with a very nice green patina).

Cleaning, unfortunately, will not improve the condition of that particular coin. Do not get discouraged though!!! Coins can develop "patinas" (protective oxidation layers that keep the coin intact. The coin above has an even and nice green patina. The better that patina is the more $$$$$$ the coin is worth. Your coin once had a patina. I can see remnants of patina all over it. Keep hunting!!! You may be surprised what you find! Also, see the coin I posted here. It is solid gold and struck in 201 AD in Rome Italy. I could throw that coin in my backyard and come back 10,000 years later and it would still look the same. Gold does NOT corrode so..if there are any gold coins lying around where you hunt...you will find it in the exact condition that it was lost in (unless a plow chewed it up).
Yes, these coins can be found in nearly untouched condition dependent upon where and how they are found. Some coins are parts of hoards and are protected by the container they were stored in 2000 years ago or other coins surrounding them in the soil. I have been collecting these for a long time. Feel free to post anything you find and I will do my best to help you determine what it is (maybe even purchase it from you). Here is a link to some coins in my collection. I only have a small fraction of them pictured. Good luck on your detecting trips and please keep us posted on what you find. Regardless of condition, that coin you found is over 1900 years old...remember that :).

Thank you for this great info about my coin, i hope i find some more of this type coins, they are really nice. You have a very nice coin collection. I will continue my research in this area (little bit hard to dig - woods) but i also know some other Roman places... I have heard that most coins were find on farm fields. I will go on and post every find!

And one more question about that nice gold coin... what is a value of such one? Good to know...for motivation in field :)

Nice coin Gunner. Did you pick it up with your detector or did you buy it?

I bought it. Here is a better image that properly displays the coin's true characteristics.
