Traveling to visit my grandchildren in NH and found a Cellar hole, only had about a half hour to work it but found several old hinges, one about 2ft long with a nice decorative end (will post later) also a door lock set. The best was the letter opener pictured, hopefully someone can give me an idea of the age and what kind of birds are pictured. I think there are several more cellar holes close by so stayed tuned, we have a few more days to prospect.

That is a great relic.

Looks 1800's for sure. I bet there is more.

Now how cool a find is this? How long is it (if that's not a personal question).....

that is cool. buy very hard to see. try and make the picture alittle smaller please. good lord whar are y.ou a newbie? lololololol just kidding i know you are

That's a beautiful looking knife Reefchief. :icon_thumright: Is it iron or pewter?
It looks Masonic or spiritualistic in nature. :icon_scratch:
The cast birds on top look like Griffins to me.

The griffin is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. As the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle was the king of the birds, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature.

Griffins are normally known for guarding treasure and well valued priceless possessions. In antiquity it was a symbol of divine power and a guardian of the divine. Some have suggested that the word griffin is cognate with Cherub.
