Well it was another real hot one around here Saturday. I wasn't even planning on going metal detecting but when one of my MDing friends called and asked what I was doing all I could say was "Hauling this bull back to the ranch". That was a good enough reason to take a couple of hours off and go.

I can't say how excited I am about finding this spur. That's one off my bucket list. I guess the main reason is because I'm a horseman at heart and finding this spur just left me at awe. After looking at it I noticed that the bands were bent and the rowel was gone. Due to the way I found it and the way it is twisted and broke I would say that the rider had a real bad fall off his horse and the horse probably stepped on it. I don't want to damage it in any way so I'm just cleaned it with warm water and a toothbrush, no baking soda or anything. I'm not going to try and straighten it either.

***UPDATE*** Under closer inspection you can see some small scroll artwork on the shank (going to where the rowel would have been). Thanks to my "detective team" at work we have identified it as Cavalry spur from a Union enlisted man. Thanks guys!! :headbang:

That makes your awesome find even awesomer!

Outstanding. Maybe you should straighten it out and wear it. How cool would that be riding your horse with that spur.

Nice us issue foliate neck calvary spur. Very nice find. Shame so few replies.

Very nice recovery

Its good that you didn't over clean it. I like the fact you are going to leave it 'as is' also. What state was it found in? Do you have any idea what time period/campaign/camp this fits into?

Congrats on the spur !!! Your first one is always a surprise.. Digging spurs brings U good luck !
