That's A nice find.

Cool. Is it yours?

Yes, I was around 16 years old at the time, and was helping my uncle tear down several old barns and outbuildings on some land he had purchased. It was found wedged behind some slats in one of the buildings. No scabbard or anything with it. The buildings were said to have been over 100 years old at that time if I remember correctly.

Interesting story. I found one back in the early 60s still in the scabbard. I was cleaning out the basement of the house a family friend bought. He said I could keep anything I wanted. I made the mistake of showing the thing to him one day and he took it from me saying he was afraid I might hurt myself or someone else with it. And, I had a bayonet until my "Indian Giver" brother took it back!:censored::laughing7:

I found a bayonet in an old shed behind a house site we were detecting in the early 90's. It is a WWI Shefield or Wilkinson marked one, (I cant remember off the top of my head) with several inspector date stamps. The scabbard had rotted away only leaving the throat in place. I soaked it with rust penetrant and finally got the throat piece off. It actually protected the part of the blade with all the markings so I could get a positive ID on it. I can put up a pic when I get time.

Dharmacy, that is one great relic to have. The Cavalry Sabre is in great shape and in my opinion is priceless, plus the fact that you yourself found this piece and know a little History on this piece as to how and where this was found. Congrat's to you one one Fantastic piece of History.:icon_thumright:

Now, if only it could talk, and tell it's story. wow......

MAn o man...

Super friggin cool.

Um... that sword is / has been beat to hell and back.

Guard is bent back... blade has so many contact marks its not funny.

The real deal IMO and well used.

I would recheck close for faint markings... even on spine and the blade further down for etching.

I love it! Digging a complete sword has for years been in my top five things I want to dig. Number one will always be a CS plate no matter how many I dig of those. lol

I took your advice and went back over it with a loupe, but there are no markings to be found. Here are a few more closer pics of the pommel, guard and grip area.

Ok... great pics ... when I saw them I was hoping there was one of the pommel... close up.

What you are looking for will be stamped in the pommel on END...

You should see a mark.

Perhaps A.C.M.

Which would make this a less common one.

Also... A small "M" should be on blade... but the blade is such bad condition I doubt it will be found.

IF this mark is found on pommel...

it is a mark of Alfred C. Manning... 1863.

Great finds for all, congratulations. I got a complete machetes a few months ago. Believe a farm pirate owned it. About 2 feet long. Going to give it to the land owner. It is going to clean up good, but was very difficult to remove from ground.
