Hey, Back when I was younger I used to do alot with scrap metals. Last few years because of where I have lived I haven't but now I want to get back into it as a source of extra cash and some exercise. Anyway I am pretty knowledgeable about most things t do with scrapping but have to admit I have very little to do with catalytic converters.

Is there a good site to check out? Anyone care to share any info? Some of the things I am wanting to know. Whats a good price to get out of them? Is it better to cut them open and sell the stuff inside or just sell them as is? Whats a good price?(don't want to get ripped off) Which are the best ones to get? alot f junk cars off the sides of mountains around here. How far back have they used Cc's?

Also is it more profitable to try to refine the catalyst and get the precious metals out? And is this easy to do?

Sorry for all the questions most of my google searching just took me to people wanting to sell info or other info that would be useful if I understood it.

Thanks everyone and HH

takes a lot of work to get enough material to refine to make it worth it. 300-500 pounds to an ounce of platinum.

cars from 75 on and trucks from 79 on have them.

I sold 5 car ones on eBay for $200 a few months ago. some foreign ones go for up to $200.

Generally in the US cars from about 82 and beyond will have a cat. Youre best bet is to stay above 85 and beyond. Start collecting some (10) or so, them find a few different cat buyers in your area. Call them all and ask what prices they are paying for what. Obviously go with the highest payer. Ebay is ok but once you develop a good relationship with a high volume buyer I think you will be very happy with the prices they pay. check out this site http://www.catmax.net/index.php it has alot of helpful pics and helps you grade. Every buyer grades a bit different and it is best that you learn as much as you can to make the most money. Buy low sell high! Do not cut open and remove any catalyst, as there will be no way for the buyer to identify it. However it takes alot less than 300-500 pounds to get an ounce. Feel free to ask any Q's
