Does anyone know how old this cast pewter button may be? Could it be military in origin or civilian?

Mid to late 18th century would be my guess. Dont know if it's military or not. I've dug 1 piece civilian buttons the were literal tanks so it's hard to say when there plain

The size and the shape of your button, notably including the raised rim, is exactly the same as a Confederate "Pewter Cast I" button, except for lacking the "I", so some collectors consider your button to be a Confederate Army button. The Pewter Cast I is shown as button CS-185A in the book "Record Of American Uniform And Historical Buttons With Supplement" by Alphaeus H. Albert.

That would make a lot of sense since I found both confederate and union buttons at this site. Thank you for the ID on this.
