Just pulled this from the tank, its no longer a blob of concretion but I can't seem to locate a positive purpose for it. My guess would be some sort of a latch from a coal stove or box stove but the orientation of the "hook seems off. It looks as if it swiveled or pivoted from the one screw hole but the hook portion sticks out at a right angle from the flat mounting side. A positive ID would be great, thanks vn

I think you are correct my first thought before reading your post was wood stove door hinge.

Just can't seem to see how the swing of the latch would act as a "keeper" seeing that the orientation of the hook is not as you see most all latch type hinges.

Im thinking a broken shaker arm to a coal stove :icon_thumleft:

Stove hinge or Ford model T door hinge also crossed my mind. Some type of carriage or horse drawn wagon also. I did some work on a 1800s mansion and owner still had all the original shutters from 1870. I only stared at them on a ladder for 2 weeks straight. Next time I am there I'll take picture. Very interesting to say the least!

I see what you mean about the weird swing. But if it was attached to inside of door it would swing correctly, the end is broken and missing part. Or is it complete?

Could be off the door of a wood stove? You move the latch up and pull the door open. You close the door and drop it back down into the piece that holds the door shut...d2

It appears to be complete. Maybe it sat stationary and a door closed onto it, acting as a "catch". I figured it would be easy to find a pic of a similar one in its actual setting, but sometimes that is not so easy. I do think it may be stove related as many of you said, but was hoping for a "nailed it" ending. Many thanks all, vn
