I'm thinking an old cast iron deep fryer, maybe a restaurant size one to serve up lots a good ole fried chicken.

Maybe for hot ashes and coals? We used a galvanized pail, but who knows.

If it was for cooking it would have been "seasoned" that would have kept it from rusting.
