I have a piece cut from a lead bar. It has been notched and stuff but the end is my question because my father found a lead bar not too long ago with the end carved very similar. The end is carved round and has a cavity made into it. The cut off piece is the one I found and the bar is the one my father found. The carved round ends are a little different. The round part on his is longer but both are carved round with a cavity so I would assume even with the difference in the length of the round part it was done for the same purpose. Also the round part with the cavity seem to be hand carved not cast in any way.

I'm going to hazard a guess, the first pictures of the piece of lead with a hole in the middle could be weights to hold a cast net when it's thrown into the water.

It's not really a hole it's just a cavity like the one in the other pic kinda like the bottom of a three ringer but not as deep and more narrow.

The shadow of the back of the cavity makes it look like a hole but its about 1/2 inch deep.

Wish I had a straight on pic of the end if my father's. But both of them have about 1/4 inch cone then gets smaller and goes about another 1/4 inch. That smaller part is what looks like a hole.

is the hole threaded? appears like it is in the pic. maybe a pulled bullet

Not threaded. It's not a bullet it is cut off the end of a bar like the one of my father's. It is square and the same size as the end of his bar.

I know what the bars are I'm trying to figure out why they both carved round at the end with the cavities. Two found around the same area makes me think they were carved that way for a specific purpose

Just saying might not be lead. Those lines in it could be a measuring cut. The end with the cavity could be the way it was made

It's definitely lead

They deffinitley lead - also ZaxFire found simular piece as well in same general area - very puzzling. If ole Cannonball can't solve it we might not ever know what these were for.

Thank you for your expression of confidence in me. I do try hard to be worthy of it. Unfortunately, there are some times that I have to disappoint you guys. This carved/cut lead object's original shape has been changed too much for me to recognize it.

just a idea here, but i have read other post where members said soldiers would take there bullets or lead strips and carve chess pieces out of them , or other types of games . could that be the case here ?

Here is a possible clue - from a book on deep well drilling (1920's).

There is no reference to size on this item. But you can see the eye hook in the top which could account for the hole in your relic.

I'm not positive that's what you have but it could be for similar use on a smaller scale to plug a hole in pretty much anything that holds liquid.
