Cartridge ID help. Biggest one I've seen.

I found this bottom part of a rimfire cartridge case on a field that I have no idea of the age, use, or anything. It is close to historical areas for both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. I've found a 1886 Indian head penny as well as modern bullets.

The rim diameter of the rim of this shell is 16mm. I have no idea where to go from here. Gatling gun? Blank headstamp fits but I can't find a rim size listed anywhere.

Thanks!

Daryl

Wow.... Daryl, that is large. I've found some that measure roughly .41 cal., but never anything that big. Still don't what the ones are that I found.

Sweet find...........

I got one but it has both scales. Crap. Seems like every time I measure something I guess the wrong way. BUT, the mm measurement is more accurate than the Merican side. ;D

Thanks,

I have a gut feeling it's not a Gatling. I can't find head dimensions for the various rimfires. 16mm = 0.62", but the case itself would be smaller. I'm thinking a .58 wouldn't have enough rim

I think you are right Charlie. If I use the fereign side of my measuring stick, I think the case diameter is 14mm and the rim is 16mm. That converts to 0.6299 for the rim and 0.551 for the case. That matches the 54 Ballard Rifle 0.637 Rim 0.556 Case, the 45-60 Peabody 0.648 Rim 0.563 Case, the 52 Sharps & Hankins Carbine 0.633 Rim 0.556 Case, the 52 Meigs 0.633 Rim 0.556 Case, the 56 Starr 0.645 Rim 0.559 Case, the 56-46 Spencer Long case 0.638 Rim 0.559 Case, The other 56 Spencers, are all pretty close.

Any idea which don't have a headstamp like the Gatlin?

Re: Cartridge ID help. Biggest one I've seen.

Now that troubled me, too. I have a rolling-block pistol .50 Remington (unfired & not dug) rimfire cartridge of CW era and even that one has the "U" headstamp, though it is very fine and shallow. All the Spencers I have seen have a headstamp, also.

We need someone with the old "Cartridges of the World" reference book to look up the non-headstamped rimfires.

Thanks for the headstamp Info. I'll look again.

Mine has no headstamp.

Thanks JustGeese. Does it show any about the size of mine with no headstamp?

Thanks,

Daryl

Me either. The only one I can find with no headstamp is the cartridges for the Gatlin gun. That's where I started.

Thanks,

Daryl
