Cartridge box US plate. Bullet struck?

I found this US plate last Saturday. At first I thought it was a buckle, but a CW historian friend of mine showed me that it was a plate off of a cartridge box. He also pointed out that it may have been bullet struck between the U and S. What do you all think?

Re: Cartridge box US plate. Bullet struck?

Bullet doesn't appear to have penetrated the plate...could have been punched with a blunt object though.

Did you find it in WV? How deep was it?

Beverly, WV., near the Tygart river.

8"s, all of the CW relics I'm finding in this particular field are all about 6" to 8"s.

I'm quite certain it wasn't shot. Take a minnieball and just throw it at the plate. You can do a lot more damage that what I can see on yours.
Of course I'm just kidding. But use that as an example, a true fired bullet would have done a LOT more damage!!!!

Re: Cartridge box US plate. Bullet struck?

Seems to me if it had been struck by a bullet it would have far more damage, maybe not a hole but a big sunken divet at least. I sure would like to find one in any kind of shape.

Re: Cartridge box US plate. Bullet struck?

I don't believe it was struck by a bullet. I met a man on a job I working that got me into metal detecting. That was back around 1988. He showed me some CW relics that were awesome, one in particular. It was a union belt buckle that was struck directly between the U and S. The miniball was still lodged in the buckle. The buckle just wraped around the ball like a taco. That gave me the bug. Ihave only found 1 CW relic since that time. A bridal rossette. This was in Mason Co. W.Va. I need to go to some battlesites to have a better chanceof finding these things. If anyone in W.Va. has access to such places and would like a hunting partner please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it. Happy Hunting!
