Just curious if any of you prospectors have gone to college for a degree in geology or mining, etc? And could tell me how hard it is? Right now my major is physical therapy assistant but I'm not 100% dead set on it and thinking about a bachelors in geology instead. I love field work and the outdoors more then about anything else. I hate not being able to identify the stuff I am pulling up from the ground so I am always doing research on minerals and geology anyway.

Thing is I am terrible in math (I barely passed college algebra with a 71 last semester) and I read online that you need calculus to get a bachelors in geology so that's kinda got me worried.

What I would do is to talk to who ever has control over such a education, I personally will go to read up on jeweller, possibly gemmologist.
I believe more chemistry them math is involved. However talk to someone who REALLY knows i.e. teacher.

Last year I heard (read ?) that a geology degree was worth a lot in Canada - more dough coming out of 4 years in college than most any other field.

The oil/gas/minerals industry was really booming in Alberta, British Columbia, etc.

I don't know if things have changed in today's economy - thirty minutes on google could tell you.

I would really like and education in geology but find myself at an age that it would be more cost effective to learn from the pro in the field and some online information. I spend a lot of time in the mountains around here(Washington state) and talk to geologist, prospectors, rockhounders, and overall naturalist to get a good knowledge of what's here.

I'm at that age where I have some timers but I can keep up with a conversation in geology without feeling dumb about it. Some people think that I took courses in geology but I just learned a lot a little bit at a time over a long time.

If I were younger, then I would get that education in geology.
