I know a lot of you have your own preferences on "care instructions" for relic finds, but since I'm still pretty new to MD'ing, I thought I'd ask. Yesterday I unearthed (looks like) an old belt-buckle from a ~1825 homestead lot, and I'd like to know how you guys go about getting it cleaned, etc? Any tips for cleaning solvents/etc, expected time-frame, other general tips are appreciated!

There's a whole section here on Tnet devoted to cleaning and preserving your finds. If it's iron, soaking it in Evaporust will do the job. Also electrolysis or a vinegar bath will do it too. If brass, I like the vinegar bath overnight and a rub with baking soda before rinsing it off in water.

Got it. Thanks! I’ll get to work and if I can uncover it, I’ll post a pic
