These two items with loops on the back were found near each other with CS Civil War bullets, one piece flower buttons, a 1812 infantry button, early 1800 coins, but there was some modern trash mixed in. There is a similar piece on page #87 in Charlie's book "Civil War Relics of the Western Campaigns called a cape pin. Any clues on a positive id?------ Thanks, Bigcypresshunter,Crusader and Buckleboy for all the info, I'm going to call them cape pins and put them in my Civil War collection as prized relics. This site is awesome!

Yes, I think those are cape pin halves. Very nice.

Re: Cape pins or jewelry

Im searching cape pins and cape closures but I cant find any good examples. :icon_scratch:

This may not be of any help but I remember an eagle found here that had the cape closure type chain rings on it and it turned out to be something else. Something related to a sword I believe but I cant remember... cant find the old post. I only have this pic with the chain cut off. You can see part of it if you look closely. Maybe or maybe not a clue. :D :dontknow: Just trying to get the conversation going.

Re: Cape pins or jewelry

I feel almost 100% positive that these are cloak fasteners of some sort. I have seen several of these items dug, and the button loops on the back are the big clue. They were sewn in one side of the cape/coak and then fastened at the other end via a hook or some other attachment.

Someone should reply to the post up above with an ID on the eagle/shield thingy too. I must've missed that post the first time around.

Best Wishes,

Buckles
