Can't quite figure out what this is

Hello Everyone!

I found this at an old fort site. The site dates back to the late 1700's to early 1800's
I am sure that it isn't an ash tray or why would there be holes in the bottom part?
Perhaps it is a candle holder?

Any ideas?

It is made of copper and seems pretty old and ornate.

Well maybe someone has an idea about it.

Thanks and HH!

Re: Can't quite figure out what this is

It looks like it belonged on one of those wall hangers that held a oil lamp

Hi GypsyHeart!

Thanks for the reply, perhaps that is exactly what it is. I didn't find anything else in the area that would associate with a gas lamp holder, mostly bullets and a couple of old army buttons. After it's initial clean up with electrolysis, it appears to be in good shape. Perhaps someone will come along with some more information.

Until then,

HH and good luck on the MD'ing!

Yes, have to agree it looks like a receptacle for some type of candle or fuel as it is blackened pretty good. Looks as if fire had been burning in it. Monty

Re: Can't quite figure out what this is

I am going to second guess myself again....I am reading an old antique book that states this was a copper chafing dish....made for a brazier . This was a small copper bowl like dish ...like you have that sat on a three legged brazier ..the chafing dish with an alcohol burner was developed in the US....It is said that Paul Revere made copper ones in the 1780's. The picture in book looks just like your dish...

I will try to scan this and email it you tomorrow............................

Gypsyheart,

Hello, and thank you for the info.

But would you be ever so kind and perhaps send that page? I haven't been able to find that book lately.

Thanks a bunch if you would.

Hi GypsyHeart!

Thank you very much!

What a coincidence! I was just looking at the email and (honestly) was afraid to open it.

Ok..I'll check it now.

I found out this weekend that the town I live in has about 8 parks that I never even knew existed, I checked with the local library and found an old 1887 map of some of the parks as they were then, and as they are now.....Great! now I have couple of more weeks of some intense, slow, deep...MD'ing!

I'll let you know what I find over the next few days!

Thanks again,

Re: Can't quite figure out what this is

Hello GypsyHeart!

Thanks for the file, it does help me to understand what that object is.

Ok, now for the results from the park yesterday.

First time in a new place, at least for me, there is always a ton of trash that needs to be cleaned out.

It's the first pic here.

Found an old toy gun, a military school "old boy" pin that I believe is gold plated, a very, very nice lincoln wheat 1936 D that is almost perfect except for being in the ground so long. It cleaned up great.

But the oddest thing, is that I found two pieces of raw aluminum ore. I put one of them on the gas stove and watched it start to melt little droplets.

Cannot imagine for the life of me how two pieces of raw aluminum ore found its way into this park, but there must always be a reason.

Anyway, I only got through just a small part of this area, usually I work the outside parameter, kind of like mowing a yard, and then follow that path, taking side tracks as samples and then continue with the pattern.

So there is most of the park left to detect.

Thanks again for the info GypsyHeart,

Tim
