I picked this up cheap at a yard sale recently and want to leave it as is. Anybody have any idea what it has on the bottom?

OK just from posting a pic instead of looking directly at it I now see a half circle as well. That should help me a little.

Have you tried a piece of paper and rubbing a pencil over it sometimes that will bring out the lettering

i'd let it sit in an electrolysis bath for a day or two and see if it becomes more visible. I use the E-bath to clean up my bench vises when they have heavy rust. Its really gentle and won't remove the underlying metal, just the rust.

Whatever it is, the second photo shows the word upright, First pic is upside down. Here is a 19th/20th century foundry database that may help if we can determine the first letter.

I have a few boot scrapers posted outside my door; never had one that was curved, heck I do not even think my 16.5 would fit in it, and if it did it sure does not bend to the contour. Also it seems lightly joined to the base, I would give it a couple years and it be busted. But also a a FOD tray, then it should be mobile and not mounted.

No idea what it says, but I do not think it is a boot scraper.

It isn't curved quite as much as it looks in that photo. My size 12.5 fits right through it. It is definitely a boot scraper and a mud tray.

Thanks Diggummup. That's the one I thought was upright. Maybe I will just clean that area of the piece.
