cant id black crystal

can't id black crystal

Have looked through my books, & checked out mindat, but can't id this. I found it by Fredericktown, MO next to calcite crystals. Anyone have an idea as to what this is? there is a bit of a brown hue when in certain light, but most is very black.

Do you have a loupe or magnifying glass? Try taking the pic through that. Piece of cake with the newer P&S cameras.

Just to show you what a loupe and P&S camera can do. Used one of those cheaper chinese LED loupes.
Works well, you can see all the wrongs done while cutting this garnet; i.e. scratches on the table.
(one of my first garnets BTW!)

Jeeze ! That is such a beautiful color! Didn't know garnets came in that hue. I know there are several colors, but that is amazing! Nice photo! will have to try it when i get my charger back it took a mth to get my camera back!

just looked at it again w/ mag glass, & saw a cube so I think it's probably hematite, or galena. just blacker than any I've seen before.
today I went to the site & collected some dog tooth calcite crystals about an inch long. forgot my rock hammer & chisel!?. what kinda rock hound am I anyway.

I would go with Pyrite if cubic, I've seen pyrite crystals with a blackish tarnish.

I can't say the "black" is tourmaline.. the formation isn't right.. Thou I have seen bi-color tourmaline growing very close together.. But these growths are more simetrical and not growing or apperaing in a bunched up cluster as in the above image.

think this might be it. I went back, & found a lot of sulphur & galena. still don't have charger for camera, so ---

Yes,black tourmalin is called schorl.very common on granite,pegmatite,quartz calcite,feldspar ect.

Mama, I have a few Changers with differant adaptors.. let me know what yiou need I'll see If my bag o tricks has something for you. matter of fact this morning.. while dumpster diving.. found a navagation systemm which of course didn't have a charger and again.. due to my years of saving these chargers.. I had one for it.. So Mama, anythings possiable.. just need to knwo what kind of port you need or have.
