this button is heavy....measuring 3/4 " ...... the back says, "TREBLE GILT" on the top, and "STANDARD COLOUR" on the bottom ..

front has 2 crowns, a ship, and a banner that reads, "MAGNA CHARTA" ..... it is surrounded by a belt with an oval buckle on the bottom left.....inside the surrounding belt it reads: "PRO REGE ET PATRIA" ....from what i can tell, that is latin and means "for king and country" or something to that effect.....

any guesses?

Your button's 1-piece brass construction with a raised-lettering backmark dates it from approximately 1790 through the mid-1800s. Based on the button's emblem, with "Magna Charta" and "For King And Country" mottos, and the backmark's spelling of color the British way (colour), indicate your button is a British army or militia button for a specific Regiment (or other military unit such as a Battalion). You might an exact match-up for it among the many-many British Military buttons at the UKDFD (United Kingdom Detector Finds Database). Or, perhaps one of this forum's United Kingdom readers will recognize it and tell you its ID.

The encircling belt design is common in Scottich (Glengarry) designs and family crests/mottos.

Clan Cameron has the same motto ("For King and Country").
