I work at a grocery store which allows me to observe the Coinstar machine (found a silver quarter and two silver dimes so far this year) and coins which would normally go to the bank, or our service center, go into the machine. Guess what. They sit there for a long time and when they are retrieved, they are not immediately banked.

My point is that the rise of coinstar contributes to the coin "shortage".

IMHO.

This is where trading boxes works. That's what I do. That way the bank has exactly the same amount of coin when I leave that they had when I came in, but I have new boxes to search.
A couple weeks ago, I was talking to the head teller at one branch and she said that Loomis still sends them emails saying there is a coin shortage, but she always gets what she orders. She also orders extra each week, just in case, so her vault is about full.

I tried trading - they didn't have any, or so they said.

You have to build up to it. I've done it over years and there are times when they don't have anything I haven't seen, particularly with nickels. That's why I have more than one branch I can go to.
