Can't believe it...platinum and diamond ring (updated 8/3/06)

Well I finally did it. Found some jewelery of value...and how.
I was digging a site that was active starting sometime in the early 1920s that I got permission to hunt. It's an old farm and now is a site that has some restaurants and they do weddings. However the atmosphere of the place is rustic and outdoors. Very casual. In fact they still retain some of the farm on the premises. Also my wife and I were married there.

I was searching the area, in fact where we were married outdoors. They also serve outdoor lunches there now so I knew there was the potential for a lot of coin and possibly jewelry. This specific area was about 20x20 ft square. Was covered in wood chips about 3 inches deep. found over $5.00 in clad. Got a +6 - +8 VDI reading on the MXT. However it was a strong signal (full bar for you Whites users) and it was consistent. I learned on this forum that gold will hit like foil and it was easy digging so I decided to dig it even though it's typically a foil signal.

Well, good thing I did. This ring is a combined wedding band and engagement ring soldered together. However, it's not gold. IT's PLATINUM. 10% Iridium platinum no less. Went to jeweler to have the diamond looked at. It's just shy of a carat and its value for the stone alone is $5,000. The platinum setting is around $2200 or so. So the ring is about $7200 in value. On top of that the mark on the inside says '10% Irid Plat'. This stamp was only made on iridium platinum rings made between 1890 - 1930. So it was probably a handed down ring.

I will call the owner of the property and ask if anyone has called and said they lost a ring. i'm sure they are upset whomever it is. If no one, then my wife has said she would like it. How can I say no. She's in love with it. Oh well, easy come easy go.

The pictures don't do it justice cuz they are scans and it's hard to scan a ring. Once I get photos, I'll edit this post with them.

Dig those foil signals!!!

Here is a much better picture of the ring added 8/3/06

WOW!!! Great find!!! I applaud you on your effort to find the owner. Something of that value would be tempting to say nothing, and to just keep it.
Kind of makes me wonder if a wedding didn't go as planned. Or someone was left at the alter.
Seems it should at least qualify for Western & Eastern Treasures. WTG!!!! HH
