Cannonball or mill ball ?

Well my first week into this hobby I went to a civil war battle ground and found this ball about 18 inches deep in a creek ... It had black covered around it some but I didn't know if it could have been a canister ball from a 42pdr. It weighs 1.37 pounds and is 2-1/4 inches thick on the long and 2-1/8 inches thick on the short ....I was noticing the seam at about the middle.... I wonder if it's just an old steel ball or an actual civil war ball. Any help would surely be appreciated ! Thanks everyone.

welcome to the club.
just a thought, but,
does it rattle when you shake it?
might be something nice inside:dontknow:
that seam is interesting

It looks to be steel and not iron so it wouldn't be canister or cannonball I'd say it was for cleaning the interior of cement trucks

This is odd
What I've noticed is that there are positive / raised bumps on the surface, indicating that the ball has possible balls on the inside that have pushed out the surface of the ball
In other words, balls within a ball
Also looks like it may have been either fired or was in a fire
Just my opinion
