A friend of mine bought this at a military show a few years ago… they are getting ready to sell it and I’m interested.. The cannonball was found while dredging in the Delaware River. He indicated it came from the HMS Augusta, a British Rev War frigate which was sunk during the Battle of Red Bank in 1777.
I believe the Augusta was fitted with 6#, 9#, 12#, and 18# cannon. Does anyone have actual measurements for British Rev. War solid shot.. especially the 9# and 12#.
The cannonball measures a little over 4”… (maybe 4 3/8”?). I’m trying to figure a way to get an accurate measurement. It seems to be encrusted in a stone type sediment and measuring across the top for a diameter is difficult. As you can see from the photos, there is a seam.. hopefully that’s ok for Rev War shot.
Thanks for looking and your comments.
