One more for you guys. I dug up this cannonball in the same woods where I find a lot of civil war relics in savannah. Is it just me or do you see a confederate flag engraved on it? Not sure if its a yank or rebel cannonball. Have there been cannonballs with carvings in them before? Might be my eyes playing with too! Thanks!

I don't see it. I see where you see an X but that looks like it was caused from the digging or cleaning.

Never in my life have I see an engraved cannon balls, and I've seen thousands.

Hmm. That's how it came out. Havnt cleaned it. There's actually a border going around the x if you look closely. But I never heard of engraved cannonballs either.

If it's a solid shot, clean it. The markings will stay if anything has been etched on it. Congratulations, and thanks for sharing. Like to see it after you clean it up.

I take no pleasure in having to disappoint you, but absolutely NO cannonballs with engaving on them were ever issued to the soldiers. Also, soldiers didn't have metal-engraving tools, which is what is needed to engrave cast-iron, an extremly hard metal. Yes, you can make a tiny scratch-mark on it with a pocketknife, but no civil war era knife can dig into cast-iron enough to produce an engraving. To do that, you need an expensive superhardened steel engraving tool -- something no soldier would be carrying around in his knapsack.

However, a few engraved cannonballs do exist. They were created by a professional Engraver in Gettysburg PA, about 10 years after the end of the civil war, for sale to veterans and collectors who wanted Gettysburg battle souvenirs. They have the words "Gettysburg 1863" deeply engraved in flowery script. I've owned several in the past, but unfortunately I don't have a photo of one to post here.
