hi folks!! i need some help here!! i will send this over to the whats it section but i figured i would run it threw here first to show you guys. NO its not a watch! and NO its not a compass! this is solid one piece cast with three holes! one on each side and one on the bottom. my buddy found this at a rev site and seems to think it was some type of tool on cannons. when he found it there was a one foot chain on it. it looks familiar like ive seen it on a mag before. has any one ever seen one of these before??? thanx. willy

Tag. Interesting piece :icon_thumright:

Would the two holes on the side be for a bar insert in order to tighten/adjust? The hole at the bottom does appear to have a catch inside.

Could it be a tape measure? And the chain was used to attach it to a chatelaine?

Not exactly like this - but here is a general idea

Good suggestion Bramblefind. Would expect more of a slot than a hole on a tape measure.

Maybe it's an old padlock. The chain had a bar attached to it that was inserted through the piece. The bottom hole would be the keyhole (something missing).

In order for that to work, the bottom hole is where the lock mechanism was controlled with a key.

Maybe the two holes on the side were for mounting in a frame stand and a chain connected from top to bottom was where items like pocket watches or keys were securely stored. The fitting to the bottom hole was more like a twist snap attachment.
